What Makes Us Unique

Virginia Tech students choose from more than 70 undergraduate and 110 graduate degree programs and learn from world-renowned faculty experts. With Tech’s challenging academic standards, Hokies are among the best and brightest. Each student at Virginia Tech has a personal computer, high-speed Ethernet connections in all residence halls, and wireless access in all academic buildings. The university’s technological capabilities allow students to learn better and faster and prepare themselves for tomorrow’s workplace.

As Virginia's leading research university, Virginia Tech consistently ranks among the nation's best and offers its students access to groundbreaking research opportunities, both in and out of the classroom. Tech’s Study Abroad Program, Cooperative Education Program (co-op), internships, and work-study options provide numerous ways for students to augment their college careers. At the Career Services Building (recently constructed and one of only two college-level career resource facilities in the country), dedicated personnel assist students in making optimal use of their skills and knowledge to successfully explore and choose academic majors and post-graduate career paths.

Spanning 2,600 acres with more than 100 buildings, Virginia Tech’s campus is unlike any other, crafted with unique Hokie stone and Gothic design and surrounded by Virginia’s natural beauty. Along with Tech’s unique architecture, the Virginia Tech Corps of Cadets is a tradition that distinguishes the university from most others and provides the university with the combined advantages of a military-style leadership development program and a "civilian" lifestyle on its campus. Whether a civilian or a cadet, life as a Hokie is never dull! With more than 600 student organizations, 21 NCAA Division I athletic teams, a culturally diverse student body, award-winning dining facilities, a lively and newly renovated downtown area, and an abundance of recreational opportunities, Virginia Tech students have countless ways to get involved, meet new people, and have fun.

Famous Alumni

Fun Facts

  • Bruce Smith ('85) - NFL defensive end; #1 pick in 1985 NFL Draft
  • Chris Kraft ('44) - NASA architect of Mission Control and the first flight director
  • Clifton C. Garvin ('43) - Former Chairman and CEO of Exxon Corp.
  • Homer Hickam ('64) - Author of the memoir "Rocket Boys", which was the basis for the film "October Sky"
  • William E. Dodd (1898) - U.S. ambassador to Germany (1933-1938)
The term "Hokie" was coined by O. M. Stull (class of 1896) and has nothing to do with a turkey.

When the university’s name changed from Virginia Agricultural and Mechanical College to Virginia Agricultural and Mechanical College and Polytechnic Institute (shortened to VPI), the original college cheer was no longer suitable. Thus, a contest was held to select a new spirit yell, and Stull won the $5 top prize for his cheer:

Hoki, Hoki, Hoki, Hy.
Techs, Techs, V.P.I.
Sola-Rex, Sola-Rah.
Polytechs - Virginia.
Rae, Ri, V.P.I.

"Team! Team! Team!" was later added, and an "e" was added to "Hoki."

Traditions / School Myths

The Virginia Tech Corps of Cadets is a tradition that distinguishes the university from most others. It required corps participation for every able-bodied male for four years until 1923 and then for two years until 1964, when it became voluntary. Virginia Tech remains one of three public universities in the country (Texas A&M and North Georgia College and State University are the others) with the combined advantages of the military-style leadership development program through the Corps of Cadets and "civilian" lifestyle on its campus.
