A Mendoza College of Business alumnus recently commented that the distinguishing characteristic of his educational experience at the University of Notre Dame was a “lifestyle-focused, rather than career-focused, mindset.” In other words, students aren’t educated just to find good-paying jobs, but to build lives that incorporate knowledge, skills and passion, with a view to contributing to a the common good.
The holistic sentiment springs from the deepest root of Notre Dame and radiates through all the programs, including the MBA program at the Mendoza College. Education involves not only teaching the individual, but teaching the individual to recognize a role of service to the human community. It is not about teaching knowledge or skills in silos, but integrating knowledge across disciplines to promote critical thought.
At the Mendoza College, an MBA candidate should expect rigorous academic coursework, an excellent faculty, and many opportunities to interact with corporate executives and industry experts who can immerse them in the realities of today’s business world. We offer small class sizes, international study programs and an innovative curriculum. Notre Dame has one of the most beautiful college campuses in the nation and the most extensive – and perhaps avid – alumni network in the world.
But what truly sets the College apart from other business schools is our challenge to all of our students to “Ask More of Business™,” to discover all the ways business can be used as a transforming force for good in the arenas of personal integrity, effective organizations and the greater good of the global community. “We have an opportunity to inspire our students, to enable them to see how they can become solutions to issues as big as poverty and peace, and as routine as a safe working environment or a day of schooling for a young African girl,” said Carolyn Y. Woo, Martin J. Gillen Dean.
